Chronic management

The chronic management rules, Part 5221.6600, apply to all types of physical injuries. If an employee continues to have symptoms and physical findings after appropriate nonsurgical and surgical treatment and the employee is unable to resume the activities of daily living, the employee may be a candidate for chronic management. The purpose of chronic management is:

  • to assist the employee in becoming independent of health care providers;

  • to assist the employee in returning to the highest functional status that is reasonably possible.

Modalities of chronic management that are covered by the treatment parameters include:

  • home exercise

  • health clubs

  • computerized exercise programs

  • work conditioning and work hardening programs

    • chronic pain programs

    • psychological treatment
