Commissioner Ken Peterson

Ken PetersonKen Peterson was named commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry by Governor Mark Dayton in December 2010. Previously, he served in the same position from 1988 to 1990. Peterson’s chief goals as commissioner have been to enhance the department’s delivery of services through more employee involvement and increased use of online communications; reduce workplace injuries through better on-the-job safety practices; and encourage better preparation of the state’s work force through the apprenticeship system.

Peterson has served in other leadership positions at the state and city level.

From 1999 to 2007, he was the state’s deputy attorney general for government operations and supervised attorneys representing various state government agencies. Peterson also served as deputy commissioner for utility regulation of the state Department of Public Service, as director of St. Paul's Department of Planning and Economic Development, and as chief of staff of the St. Paul mayor's office.

He has also worked in private law practice and as a college professor. He started his legal career on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota.
